I would like to repeat that these are one of a kind pieces. Each box is a refurbished antique, and each redware tile is handcrafted, and hand painted by Selinda Kennedy.
Horning: "the manufacture of powder horns and like accoutrements from cow horn and accented by incorporating wood, bone and metal."

Fine Folk Art & Arms
The The Fine Folk Art & Arms Show took place this past Friday and Saturday in Carlisle, PA. Congratulations to John & Peggy Labella for putting together a good show and thanks for all their hard work. Would also like to thank the Army Heritage and Education Center for allowing all of us 18th century folks into their fine establishment for the weekend. It was a fine Show with great artisans and a good turn-out of public browsing the amazing goods for sale. Enjoy the photos.

Welcome to Fall
Autumn is definitely one of my favorite times of year. The first being spring. I like seeing the colors of seasons change and watch the earth prepare herself for the long winter sleep. the Solstice brings about many changes. Soon pumpkins, cornstalks, and oversized spider webs will adorn homes in spirit of All Hallows Eve and children will be abound in costume all hoping to fill a bucket with free candy that they can gorge on for at least one night before it is put on the top shelf, out of reach, to grow stale... The leaves will continue to change, falling on the breeze and cold November rain will come and like a tailor's shears render the trees bare of their adornment to reveal the elegance of the network of branches underneath. The spirit of the North shall follow and begin his ride across the lands in which we dwell, turning skies gray and the earth Mother white and we all will sleep with her until the Eve of Christmas and then the world will be abustle until the holidays of the season pass.
Just a little passage to set the season ahead fresh in our minds. Some dread the weather but I think if we all take just a moment, we can find something serene, something wondrous in the days ahead.
My posts to the blog will be a bit slow in the next few months as I have some shows back-to-back and need to prepare as well as find time to enjoy the fall through my daughters eyes.
Soon to come: Candle/tobacco boxes, medicine cups, and York County updates.
Until next time, I remain

Cups
I thought today I would focus on something other than a powder horn. But first..a Reminder. The Fine Folk Art & Arms show is on the 19th and 20th of October at the U.S. Army and Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, PA. It is a great show with a gathering of some of the finest 18th century artisans I have seen. I will be there as well and hope you can make it.
OK, on to the horn items. Many items were made from horn but one that was almost as important as the powder horn was the horn cup, or horn tumbler. Most medicines were in powdered form and therefore required mixing with water. Another important daily ritual was the rationing of rum to the soldier in the amount of "one gil per man, per day, for the duration of his service." So the advent of the horn cup and it's importance. You would rarely find a soldier, trekker, or frontiersman on the trail or in the woods without a form of vessel to drink from.
Below are some photos of various cups I have made, in varying sizes and with various engraving. it was another medium for the horner to work with and usually with as much vigor as he worked on powder horns.

York County
Here is a project I started and it is nearing completion so I thought I would share. I made a trade with a friend of mine that makes hunting bags. He makes two bags, I make two horns, we both have a matching set. I decided on York County Screw Tips. The pictures below reflect the two horns in the white, then his horn completed. I am in the process of finishing mine and will post photos of the horns mated with the pouches after completion.
Several features of the York County screw tips is the plug shape and carving, the style of the tip with multiple rings, the tip fits into the horn top to utilize as a funnel and there should be a shoulder for the screw tip to rest on so the threads are not stressed. Incised lines, usually two, can be found at the base and the tip of the horn. there is a staple in the neck and base of the horn for strap attachment.
Enjoy

Still here
Hello all...I have not disappeared. Been busy preparing for a show in October, putting out orders and getting a website together. The website should be published soon and I will put a link here for it. I do not have much to show but will leave something here to look at until my next post.
The following pics are of a horn built by a co-worker under my tutelage. I did minor work on the horn but did carve the base plug and do the scrimshaw. overall a nice result and happy that I could actually teach someone my craft.
